Now that blockbuster drug Cialis has gone generic and costs are at an all-time low, you may be ready to ask your doctor for a refill.
Yet, there’s more to Cialis and its generic, tadalafil, than meets the eye. Cialis is often compared to Viagra (sildenafil), as both are common erectile dysfunction drugs, but they come with different dose regimens and have various side effects. Often their generics are also used to treat various conditions.
Once you take that first dose, here’s what you should know about Cialis and its generic tadalafil.
1) A lot of manufacturers exist
The original manufacturer of the Cialis brand name is Eli Lilly & Co. Nevertheless, multiple drug companies have launched their own generic versions since Cialis became generic in October 2018. We are currently in and counting 16 generic manufacturers. Such companies include, among others, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Torrent Pharma, Camber Pharmaceuticals, and the Laboratories of Dr. Reddy. This is promising news for tadalafil prices, as more independent options mean more competition from the industry and lower prices.
2) You have your dosing plan choices
If you are considering using generic cialis to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), know that there are two ways you can take it: either as necessary or on a daily basis. The normal choice keeps Cialis in your blood at appropriate levels, so you can naturally have sex. This is different from Viagra, where you would only have the option to take it as needed, and you would have to plan ahead and allow the medication enough time to get started to work.
Cialis ‘ typical starting dose for as-needed use is 10 mg, but it may fall to 5 mg or increase to 20 mg depending on how you react. Alternatively, the doctor would prescribe the 2.5 mg tablet for daily dosing.
3 ) Tadalafil may not vary from the Cialis brand name
Patients tell us frequently how well generic drugs perform in contrast to their counterparts in the company. It is important to remember here that before they hit the market, all drugs go through a rigorous research process. In fact, the FDA has strict guidelines to ensure that generic drugs use the same active ingredients as their brand-name counterparts and are just as successful. You will learn more here from the FDA about this.
The biggest difference could be the shape of their tablets between brand-name Cialis and generic tadalafil. Cialis comes in a tablet with a yellow oval shape. Tadalafil is yellow as well, but it can be oval or round-shaped.
4 ) There is already a different version of tadalafil
Including Cialis, Adcirca, a medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in heart and lung arteries) also uses tadalafil as its active ingredient. Adcirca now also has its own generic version of tadalafil. The generic Adcirca tadalafil comes in a flat, oval-shaped tablet and is only available at a strength of 20 mg.
5) Beware of Cialis falsified
It is important to be mindful that counterfeits exist for a highly advertised medication like Cialis that can be quite costly. Cialis counterfeits previously made headlines of unconfirmed ingredients and value. And selling medicine is becoming more common online these days, where fraud is everywhere.
Be vigilant when you buy your medicines online. Licensed online pharmacies like Hey Doctor are great options for board-certified physicians who regularly deliver prescriptions. If you are considering this path, just be sure to consult your regular doctor. For more information on finding legitimate online pharmacies, please visit the FDA’s guide here.
6) There are side effects of tadalafil
Cialis and tadalafil may be advertised as having some major advantages, but don’t forget that all medications are at risk of side effects. According to our Iodine mates, while taking Cialis or tadalafil, most people tend to experience flushing, nausea, stomach pain, back pain, and the common cold. Nevertheless, it is understood that Cialis produces less flushing than Viagra, or redness in the eyes. Cialis may also induce more than 6 hours of painful erections. If this happens to you, immediately see your doctor.
7) More than erectile dysfunction, Cialis and its generic treatment
The FDA recommends both cialis and tadalafil to treat erectile dysfunction and signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as urinating trouble. Cialis and tadalafil treat ED at doses of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis to allow blood to flow freely and induce erection. For both medications, the 20 mg dose is for BPH which works by calming the prostate muscle cells, so urine can stream out of the bladder freely.
