Could Erectile Dysfunction be induced by Porn ?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability during normal sexual activity to get or sustain a total erection. It can occur sporadically, or it can be a long-term or even permanent problem.

For many reasons, ED can affect men, including physical and psychological causes such as anxiety about performance, depression, or poor physical health. But what about pornography watching? This is what the study shows.

Porn and sexual anorexia

Though ED often affects older men, a study conducted in Italy found that an increase in internet pornography among teenage boys can cause “sexual anorexia,” or a pathological loss of appetite for romantic-sexual interactions. Since then, the idea that watching too much porn causes ED to spread like wildfire.

But not every specialist thinks that way.

“Our study and now two others have found no relationship between men’s view of the amount of sex films and their partner’s erectile function,” says Nicole Prause, Ph.D., a sex psychophysiologist and licensed psychologist at the Sexual Psychophysiology and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory. Her research was published in Sexual Medicine with Jim Pfaus, Ph.D., IF, and was the first peer-reviewed study on this topic.

“In one case, in people who reported watching more sex films at home, the study found greater sexual excitement,” she adds.

Only those men who were liberal and in relationships had any association between watching sex films and working erectile.

“Taken together, this means porn videos are not leading to erectile dysfunction,” notes Prause. “Nonetheless, those whose personal values contradict sex movies can experience general shame about gender, which also affects their erectile functioning.”

Yet porn can affect sexual appetite

Moreover, psychologists say that watching pornography can reduce the sexual appetite of a person. This can make an erection hard for them and have an orgasm with a sexual partner.

Nikki Martinez, PsyD, LCPC, says modern exposure to a wide range of adult materials can make it difficult for a person to get angry with his partner or engage in sexual activity as they always have.

“We exposed their true desires and urges, and now they’re struggling to get excited when it’s not involved,” she says. “The other partner feels rejected and as if they’re not desirable, and most often the first partner is too embarrassed to tell them what’s going on.”

It can also affect your self-examination

Natalie Finegood Goldberg, LMFT, CST, says pornography is capable of creating unrealistic expectations about what sex should look like and what your partner will look like and can do. Pornography can cause shame for many men, she says, if they feel they don’t live up to the actor’s standards.

“And not to mention the section where people can get any fantasy hand-delivered to them through pornography outlets, rather than having to open up what turns them on to their partner.”

Alexis Conason, PsyD, who works in New York City, says she doesn’t think that porn causes erectile dysfunction, but it’s important to look at how somebody views pornography. “For example, compulsive porn viewing, or watching multiple scenes at once, or switching quickly from one scene to another, create a lot of unusually experienced stimulation in real-life sexual encounters. This can create problems with ED, “she says.

“However, watching men in porn can trigger feelings of insecurity when people compete with the actors, and this can contribute to ED.”

So, what should a man do?

If you think any of these elements of pornography can affect your sexual functioning, Goldberg suggests going fast for at least 90 days on pornography. This can help soften visual signals that can be overdeveloped by daily viewing of pornography. She encourages people through their other senses to explore their sexuality and sensuality during this break.

This[ exploration] may also include excitement by means of visual indications, but the visual indications must be3-dimensional, “she says. “Formal partner exercises such as sensitive focus are very helpful in restoring the connection of a person to a more robust sensuality.” Goldberg encourages sensations to masturbate for self-pleasant purposes rather than recalled pornographic images.

“I inspire people to dig deep and explore their sexuality by making a list of their turn-ons outside the porn and visual realms as well,” she says.
